On Friday, I got to know from Jackal that Hardware Magazine (HWM) is giving out 80GB harddisk for the first 100 people each day that sign up for 1 year subscription at PC Fair.
Woke up 7.30am in the morning on Satuday because I cannot remember what time PC Fair starts. I know it should be 11am but to be safe I set off from home at 8.30am.
Its feels quite nice to drive out early on weekends as you do not get the usual work rush traffic. I reached KL Convention Center and parked at the open air car park beside it. Had time to choose a nice spot under the tree for the shade some more. A vast difference compared to my other visits to PC Fair where I have to queue before entering the car park and tailing people that are walking to their car to get their spot.
As I expected, the fair starts at 11.00am. Walked over to KLCC to get newspaper and sat in Burger King to have their breakfast. I like their Crossanwich (Not sure its spelt this way and lazy to google for it) + Mini Hash Browns set.
I got back to the entrance of PC Fair by 10.20am and there’re already dozens of people hanging at the entrance area. I overheard some of them talking about the harddisk. That’s when I realized that the people near the entrance have the same agenda as me. Quickly, I claimed myself a spot near the entrance and started reading the newspaper to kill some time.
As the time trickled towards 11.00am, people began to crowd at the entrance. Seems like all these people are well informed of the bargain.
11.00am, Gate opened and I saw the 1st few people started running, once I cleared the gate, not to lose out, I ran too. I am roughly in the 20th+ position at that moment. I managed to cut a few people as I picked up the pace going into the 1st ballroom on level 3. After the exiting the 1st ballroom, some guys took a wrong turn to the right instead of the left. Blind leading the blinds, I cut another few people there. To get to the next ballroom, I need to ran past beside the entrance, the people there must be thinking these people damm KIASU.
As I ran into the next ballroom on level 3, I saw the front guys started to slow down, I paced myself and overtook them 1 by 1. I am in pole position upon exiting the ballroom. I slowed my pace as I go down the escalator knowing I will definately be the 1st 100.
As I reached level 1, I slowly jog towards hall 5. Suddently, I heard alot of quick foot steps from behind, some of the guys took the lift from level 3 to level 1. They managed to catch some breath while waiting for the lift and inside the lift, so they are able to sprint again, damm cheats. Not to be outdone, I picked up my pace again. The distance from hall 1 to hall 5 is roughly 500 meters, while I kept up with the pace, some of the guys are slowing down again. Upon reaching the entrance of hall 5, I am in pole position again.
Having checked the booth layout before hand, I know exactly where HWM booth is. I jog pass some of the cheering exhibitors to reach the HWM booth. And I saw 1 of the HWM staff taking pictures of me and the people behind me (Hopefully my face won’t appear on the next issue).
There was already a queue at the booth. They are exhibitors from other booths. I lined up and the HWM staff gave me a slip of paper written no 17. After all the running, I got no 17???? Nevermind, as long as I am the 1st 100.
With RM144 for the yearly subscription of HWM, I got a 80GB Samsung 2MB Cache HDD, a Kingmax 128MB Thumb Drive, a DVDR, a coaster, a cap and a strap. Hell of a bargain and definately worth it for me to wake up early, marathon inside KL Convention Center and being so KIASU.
